What actually moves local-pack rankings in 2026

Local SEO is the most useful channel a trades or home-services business can run. It's also the one most agencies get badly wrong, because the tactics that worked five years ago (citation blasts, link directories, keyword-stuffed GBP descriptions) are now actively unhelpful, but still get sold because they're easy to package.

Here's what I'm seeing actually move the map-pack needle for UK clients in 2026, and three things agencies still sell that stopped working years ago. This is what gets done every month on the local SEO retainer; the per-component work (citations, reviews, backlinks) is on citations and review management pages.

What actually works

1. A complete, accurate Google Business Profile

This sounds obvious. It isn’t. Most local business profiles I audit are missing the right secondary categories, don’t list services in the way Google wants, haven’t been updated with new photos in months, and have hours that drift from the actual shop hours. Getting GBP genuinely complete. Including posts, products, services, attributes, and photo cadence. Is the single biggest ranking mover available.

2. Reviews: volume, recency, substance

Reviews remain one of the strongest local-pack signals. Volume still matters, recency matters more than it used to, and the substance of what people write matters increasingly. Google can read reviews now and understands the topics they cover.

3. NAP consistency on the directories Google actually trusts

Not 500 directories. Five or six that genuinely matter for your trade, plus a clean YouTube and a clean Wikipedia entry if applicable. Name, address, phone identical across all of them. Inconsistencies confuse Google; consistency builds the entity that ranks.

4. A fast, mobile-first site with real content

Your site is the place Google validates everything else against. A site that loads in under 2 seconds on mobile, has real service-specific content, and uses proper schema markup is a ranking asset. A page-builder bloat site that loads in 8 seconds is a ranking liability.

5. Genuine on-site content that matches real queries

Not keyword-stuffed garbage. Real content that answers the questions your customers actually ask. "How much does a new boiler cost in [city]". Answered properly, with current figures and honest caveats. Will outrank thin content on a more authoritative domain every time.

What doesn’t work (but agencies still sell)

Citation blasts to 500+ directories

The directories that matter number in single digits for most trades. Submitting to 500 low-quality directories gets you a messy backlink profile and no ranking benefit. Worse, it can actively hurt if NAP is even slightly inconsistent.

Google has been detecting paid-link networks for over a decade. The "DA50+ sites" that sell links are almost universally known to Google. A paid link from one is at best worthless and at worst a manual-action trigger.

Keyword-stuffed GBP descriptions and service names

"Plumber Emergency 24/7 Boiler Repair Drainage Heating" as a service name. Google understands synonyms and context now; this style actively looks spammy and gets you downranked.

The honest framing

The thing that actually compounds in local SEO isn’t a single tactic. It’s the boring work of getting all five of the above right, and keeping them right, month after month. That’s what I do on every retainer client.

Frequently asked questions

What is the local pack (map pack)?
The block of three (sometimes two) business listings shown at the top of Google search results for queries with local intent, anchored to a map. Distinct from the organic results below. The local pack is the highest-ROI real estate for trades and home-services businesses because click-through rates are dramatically higher than organic results, especially on mobile.
How long does it take to break into the local pack?
Honest range: 8–16 weeks for first appearances in the pack, 4–8 months for stable top-3 placement. The biggest single variable is competition density in your specific service area. Plumbers in central London take longer than plumbers in a small town because the pack for "plumber central London" is being fought over by hundreds of agencies; the pack for "plumber Hexham" is being fought over by 5.
What matters most for local pack ranking?
Five things, in roughly this order of weight: (1) Google Business Profile completeness and activity, (2) NAP consistency across the open web, (3) review velocity and quality, (4) on-page local relevance signals on your website, (5) authoritative inbound links. Everything else is noise.
Do I need reviews to rank?
Practically yes. You can rank for low-competition local queries with zero reviews, but you will not rank for any commercially valuable query without them. Reviews are the single most actionable ranking factor because they are within your direct control — every job done is an opportunity to ask. The mistake is buying or faking them. GBP suspensions for review fraud are the second most common suspension reason after verification failures.
Why do my rankings fluctuate week to week?
Three usual reasons. (1) Genuine Google SERP volatility — there is a baseline ~5–15% week-on-week rank movement in local pack results, especially in competitive niches. (2) Your competitor is doing active work. (3) Your Google Business Profile activity has changed. If your dashboard shows rank drops of more than 3 positions sustained over 2–3 weeks, that is a real signal. Single-week drops of 1–2 positions are noise.
What is the difference between local pack and organic ranking?
Local pack is the map block at the top of the SERP, ranked primarily on GBP + NAP + review signals. Organic ranking is the regular blue-link results below the map, ranked on traditional on-page + backlink signals. You can rank #1 organically without appearing in the local pack, and you can appear in the local pack without ranking #1 organically. They require different work — most trades businesses should treat the local pack as the primary goal because that is where the click volume lives.
