The Google Business Profile checklist for painters and decorators

A lot of painters and decorators set up a Google Business Profile once and never went back to it. That’s good news if you’re willing to spend an afternoon on yours: a complete profile stands out quickly in this trade. Here’s the checklist I work through.

The basics

Get these right first. They take minutes.

  • Business name exactly as it appears on your van and invoices, with no added keywords
  • Primary category that matches your main work, plus secondary categories only for work you do
  • Services listed: interior, exterior, wallpapering, commercial, whatever applies
  • Service area set to the towns you cover
  • Hours, phone number and website correct

Photos

Before-and-after shots of your own jobs are the most persuasive thing on a decorator’s profile.

  • At least a dozen job photos to start, then a few more after each job
  • Before and after from the same angle
  • A photo of you or the team, and the van

Reviews

Customers judge decorators on tidiness, reliability and finish, so reviews that mention those win the next job.

  • Send a direct review link when you finish every job
  • Reply to every review, briefly and personally
  • Never offer anything in return for a review; it breaks Google’s rules

Keep it active

Post a recent job every week or two. In spring and summer, exterior work makes a natural theme. Answer any questions people leave on the profile.

That’s the profile done. The local SEO guide for painters and decorators covers the website and directories, and the free audit will check all of this for you.

The thing that compounds in local SEO is the boring work of getting the fundamentals right, and keeping them right, month after month.
